I wonder why the Romans decided to use Jesus's life as the basis of our present day dating system ?

The priests have always been power brokers going back thousands of years because they intercede with the gods (and you can't argue with the gods, right?). A state religion has been important for all great powers. The only great power in the history of the world that I am aware of that never had a state religion is the US but there are several groups in that country that seem to want to change that.
