Interesting.

I wonder why the Romans decided to use Jesus's life as the basis of our present day dating system ?

Interesting how much Romaness got into what was initially a very Jewish religion. For example, the Pontifex Maximus of Rome who was the official in charge of the state religion was still the same office when the state religion changed to Christianity. Pontifex Maximus is still the Latin title of the pope.

The Romans were smart guys. They realized early on that religion is the opiate of the people. They realized that when they controlled the opiate it made it easier to manipulate and control the people.

Of course it goes back much further than that. The priests have always been power brokers going back thousands of years because they intercede with the gods (and you can't argue with the gods, right?). A state religion has been important for all great powers. The only great power in the history of the world that I am aware of that never had a state religion is the US but there are several groups in that country that seem to want to change that.
